Fiumicino
Fiumicino is not just an airport (FCO)….it is first and foremost an old fishing village. Originally a port town dating back to antiquity, it became a fishing village in the 17th century. It has since remained a mainstay in Roman and regional life and is a focal point of the Roman Riviera.
FLUMEN MICINUM, as it was known at the turn of the first millenium, was established in the 1st Century on the site of the settlement of PORTUS ROMAE.
Visit the visitlazio page or www.portusproject.org for more information on the city and the region.
THE FISHING VILLAGE
WITH A BEACH
Fiumicino may be known abroad for its airport, but to locals it is that little fishing village outside Rome with very nice beaches, which are populated by Romans on holidays and weekends. It is no surprise that during the Summer months Fiumicino becomes a hotspot. The temperate climate graces the region with mild winters allowing for year-round open air life. So do as the locals do and stay in Fiumicino and relax!
